Thank you and good night

Dear Friends,

For the past two years, I’ve published NashvilleZine.com as an independent media outlet covering what I think is the best music in town. I’ve actually been publishing websites that cover local music since 1999. While it hasn’t always been fun, it has always been educational. What I’ve learned about media, readers, programming, music and the web has been more than I could have learned in school.

Unfortunately, that education had a high price. I’ve heavily invested myself financially and personally in my publications. While I was always happy to do it, I’ve recently realized that I need to spend my energy elsewhere.

So I’ve come to the somewhat sad decision that it’s time to close down NashvilleZine.

Like anyone who creates something personally important, I’d hate to compromise my original vision for the site in order to keep it running. Such compromise is what I encounter whenever I consider options for keeping the site alive. I’ve thought a great deal about ways to revitalize my interest in the site, but no matter what ideas I have, it doesn’t change the fact that my passion for the site has gone.

I’ve always been a writer. And at this point in my life, I want and I need to focus on what’s important to me: my novels. I am about to publish my second novel and I need to spend my time promoting it. Also, I’ll be writing my third novel soon and continuing my search for the ever-elusive book deal. This will leave me with very little time for other projects.

Over two years, we’ve had many fine contributors all of whom were personally involved in the music scene–whether creating music themselves or promoting it via shows they booked, labels they ran, or just their immense fandom. I want to thank them all personally for giving their time and effort freely to NashvilleZine. Without their efforts and your readership, the Zine would never have been as successful as it was.

Thank you to:
Ryan Ervin
Ben Wilkinson
Chris Spoltore

Stephanie Filippini
Andy Schenck
Jeremy Ferguson
Jessica Yung
Aaron Robinson
Rebecca McKnight
Jay Phillips
Mike Shepherd

Janet Timmons
Michael Eades
Jon Bates
Michael Davis
Sam Smith
Caldwell Dunlap
Erin Mobley

I hope you’ll support their other projects as well as my own.

Finally, thank you, readers, who’ve made this site the wonderfully active hub of information, controversy, and fun it’s been for the past two years.

If you’d like to drop me a line, please send an email to todd@todd-a.com.

Best of luck to you all.

  2. brittney Says:

    Was fun while it lasted!

  3. rebecca Says:

wtf? now where will we all exchange this witty bantor and shit? how will i know what the hell is happening? who’s gonna start a replacement? this leaves me with nothing but myspace!! fucking dammit.

*that said, good luck todd and thanks for the fun while it lasted!

    so long everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. Terry Heaton Says:

Tough decision and one that only you can make. We’ll miss your voice, and I have to believe this will just be a hiatus. Do stay in touch. I wish you the very best.

  5. Olaf Says:

typical flaky arteest… cant stay commited to anything…

  6. scene-hater Says:

great…I have to start reading the Scene again

  7. full throttle Says:

a damned shame. thanks for all your work and good luck with your book.

  8. Mark P. Says:

Wow. Well, thanks for providing the forum, Todd. Good luck to you, sir.

Rebecca, if you are feeling particularly brave and sassy, the messageboard from the band ALL spun off on it’s own and we now have a legion of foul-mouthed smartasses posting at www.thedorkboard.com. Enter at your own risk because the guys tend to flame newbies pretty heavily at first but there’s some interesting discussions and really funny shit over there (much more scathing than what is usually posted here). Most of the music talk is based around punk rock but anything is fodder for the mill. Anyway, just a thought if anyone is interested…

  9. ben Says:

Real quick, anyone want to make a “Top 10 Nashvillezine Moments” list? I want it up here on the comments by tonight. I’m looking at you, Carligula.

I’m glad I was able to be involved with this site. It’s really helped my resume in the blogging world. Also, I wish Todd the best of luck…mainly because I still have that original copy of “Being Good” in a binder and I’d love to sell it on eBay to cash in someday.

  10. tracy Says:

Man, Nashville Zine was biased, elitist and exclusive, and it was also one of the best things that ever happened to local music coverage. It has become a community service. It started a dialog that I’m not sure will continue in clubs and at shows, because by its nature, this site allowed the kind of free expression that is only possible by ignoring the weight of the byline. The comments were truly indicative of what it’s like to be on both sides of the stage in this town, and it filled a void print media couldn’t fill. And probably shouldn’t fill.

So that’s the tragedy. Where will all the “industry” people who check this site regularly go to find the latest news? How many flame wars (that would never happen in person) will miss the chance to be played out here? But more importantly, where will we go to make fun of shitty bands and each other?

Best of luck, Todd. I think you’re right to consider your own fate first, but I wish you’d reconsider and think about two words: passive income.

  11. jakob Says:

wow. this was entirely unexpected…the death of this site is definitely going to be a big blow to the nashville scene, which benefited so much from its existence.

it’s going to be hard to fill the void…i have faith that cultiv8 will be up to the task though. everyone looking for a place to go, i recommend you start there.

thanks for while it lasted, todd. it was nice meeting you last september at the g&b show, too.

  12. beth Says:

wow. this is really sad….this site really has done wonders for the scene - sometimes positive, sometimes negative, but always entertaining and informative…
thanks for everything todd, and all the others that made this site what it was.

    good luck to you!

  13. Nemesisboy Says:

When I first read this I first thougth that this had to be a joke, like maybe it is April first. But then I realize with disdain that it is not April fist. This site that I come to, with all my ambitions in life at their highest and “living the dream” on a kings income, everyday, will no longer be here to enteratin myself or give me things to talk to with my friends at the Red door on 2 for 1 nights; it’s a shame to see this pass, but I guess like a reall yhot girl in France once told me “all things must pass”, so I understand with all my heart that this is something that happens all the time; not in real life necesarily but also on the internet; however, we all get most of our knowledge adn understanding of talant (be it on bands websitse or myspae) from this wonderful creaation that has become a part of everyday life, I must say that I’ll miss this place although I do feel that the “vibe” of the forum was negetive at times, but thanx to everyone who took up for me and understands what I do as well as how I understand what you do—be it blogging, writing, or just apreciating good talant. Peace to all and to all a good night. Peace.

  14. Carligula Says:

Man, I’m just too upset for words about this. I might actually have to start working now.

Thanks for everything and good luck to you, Todd.

  15. andy Says:

Good luck to you, Todd. I can’t wait to read Barry’s Cherries. I’m glad I could contribute and hope that there will be another site soon that will continue to strengthen (and make fun of) Nashville’s music scene as much as the ‘Zine has.

  16. !henry! Says:

i know that i have been notorious for being a jerk on this board, but i would like to thank todd as well as everyone i ever conversed with through this channel. hopefully, todd, you will be moving on to bigger and better things and i wish you the best of luck with all of your efforts. thanks to all of the contributors for hooking me up with all the info about all of the shows and topics. i had a lot of fun posting here hopefully i wont fall too far out of the loop of what is going on without it.

  17. Chris "Slack" Spoltore Says:

Well, it’s quite an awful shame that the Zine is on it’s way out.

I’ve been an almost daily writer for the Zine since the beginning of the site, and I’d like to let it be known that I really, truly loved it. It’s the only site in Nashville of it’s kind. I always thought we had a great, educated and interesting audience, and that it really was unique in the sense that it covered the news and events that really were worth talking about in Nashville. It was the one place that made for an actual “community” of bands and people who went to shows, and ultimately was a great resource for shows or parties worth checking out. I can’t tell you how many times it came close to becoming a Blockbuster night at my place, and a quick page refresh of NashvilleZine changed all of that.

I can’t say that I’m not disappointed, but I can’t say that I’m surprised. Most things that ever had to do with the “indie rock scene” in town have been tentative or overwhelmingly lame at best, so the fact that this site was even up for almost three years is quite an accomplishment. The fact that it was entirely volunteer-run is also rather amazing, although I’ve always been a bit pissed– if people knew the ratio of writers who could log in and write for the site versus the amount who consistently and actually did, you’d be surprised. But that’s water under the Woodland bridge.

Which reminds me– the last time I checked, the stats on this site said that it’s been getting over 20,000 unique visitors a month. That’s INSANE, and even more so because most of it was from word-of-mouth. I can probably list about 100 of you, but I can’t get my mind around the other 19,500.

My one big regret about it is was not being able to get more coverage of all ages shows. The “you seen one all ages show, you’ve seen the mall” mentality of a lot of over 21′ers (who I assume are the majority of the readers) would have probably rendered those potential posts irrelevant, but I think there’s that whole side of town that could have been covered better.

And finally, to Todd, major thanks for all the work you put in– coming up with a great idea, the hilarious writing, the endless programming, giving me the opportunity to write, and just putting so much time into the whole ordeal. Many people will talk and mourn the loss of the place, and mostly on nights and weekends, for several reasons.

Oh yeah, for the record, Nemesisboy is a real guy.

And one more thing, if you liked reading this site, do me and everyone else who put a lot time into it a favor, and post a final comment, even if you never posted anything before. Thanks.

  18. enoch Says:

    cheers

  19. battletapes Says:

the ides of march strike again!

    et tu brute?

if i even spelled that shit right, that is. fuck.

  20. managerbrad Says:

This really was the best place to get info on local music. Lightning 100, the Scene, the Rage… they all suck. Especially compared to the Zine. It will be sorely missed and never replaced.

  21. the guy in the corner Says:

Dang! Just when I thought I was about to be as cool as Caldwell. ahh… just a pipe dream, no one can be that cool.

    - thanks todd -

  22. jeffery neutron Says:

I just want to echo everybody else and wish you good luck with your writing career, Todd. I don’t believe we’ve met, but I’m one of a great many people that has made checking nashvillezine as high a priority as checking my email over the past year or so, and I’m sure I’ll not be alone in the great pangs of withdrawal I’m sure to suffer in the coming weeks.

Thank you for the service you provided to my city. I don’t expect anybody will do it as well as nashvillezine did it for a long time to come.

And thanks to everyone that is quicker and wittier than me for keeping things interesting. You are the ones that made this forum better than good.

Here’s hoping we can make it without our zine…

  23. B Says:

I will greatly miss this site. Great writing and work while it lasted, everyone. I hope some other site fills its shoes because this definitely was the most informative place to go for music news. R.I.P. Nashville Zine.

  24. D.Striker Says:

To the website that introduced me to “You Might Like My Penis, thank you. I’m also grateful for the link to Kate Moss doing coke. Oh, thanks for covering Mindy McCready. And Darryl Worley’s furniture store. Lastly, I’m proud I made The Other Andy’s 2006 Round Up. I will miss this website something awful. Good luck Todd A!

  25. D.Striker Says:

Crap the links don’t work the way I intended…but you get the idea.

  26. wimpyisdead Says:

    this was a great thing.
    sorry to see it go.
    good luck Todd.
    seacrest out!

  27. Cassius Chaerea Says:

I’ll get you in the end Carligula!

  28. moosle Says:

i also appreciate all the work that went into this site. i’ll miss coming here several times a day. nothing we can do to “pass the torch” instead of an overall shutdown?

  29. Carligula Says:

Although it will no doubt make me sound like an elitist asshole, I think the biggest strength of the NashvilleZine listings was the great taste (read: similar to mine) of the contributors. Very seldom did I look at the listings and say, “Geeze, why do they list this CRAP!?” If anyone expects to re-create the NashvilleZine, then I would encourage them to get as many of the same contributors to volunteer their time to posting the listings. What I’m saying is, ToddA assembled a great group of folks. I’m sure most of them hate me for one reason or another, but for what it’s worth, I wanted them to know I appreciated what they’ve done.

  30. vivamonk Says:

Sorry to see you go. Good luck with the book.

I would love to increase the local/underground coverage on The Vivamonk! Filter. Point me in the direction of your favorite music and I will sneak some into the Scenecast as well.

  31. tucker Says:

shitty news to end a shitty day…thanks for making the previous days of the past couple of years more interesting though…

  32. scott Says:

a friend of mine and i had the idea to start a site that was basically the exact same thing as the zine several months before discovering that nashvillezine existed. i am kind of glad that we did not follow through with that idea, as i am fairly confident that it would have been nowhere near the quality that nashvillezine was. sad to see it go.

NOW how the fuck am i supposed to know what’s going on?

  33. mellenia Says:

This was definitely something great for everyone here.

With the exception of those creepy Scott Stapp stories, I will miss my nashvillezine.

  34. Ruby Says:

This is too sad. NashvilleZine was the inspiration for my lil ol blog that I just started. I hope one day, I could be even half of what this site is. Thanks for the wonderful stuff.

  35. mike Says:

As one of the contributers that didn’t really contribute all that much, I want to say thanks to Todd, Michael, Chris, and the handful of others that kept this action alive. I’ll miss the squabbles, misunderstandings, pseudonymns, propositions, suppositions, slights, favors, gossip, and bullshit, but most of all I’ll miss *snff* the love.

  36. megmo Says:

It’s true, goddamn ides of fucking march! I’ll miss this a lot….

  37. Mark P. Says:

Hold me, mike! Hold me, dammit!

  38. double d Says:

man this sucks! this was a great site and a great place to virtually “hang out”.

i would start a similar site and pay for it if i knew the writers and readers of nashvillezine might be interested…

  39. m@ Says:

    What a lameass thread.

  40. ben Says:

I think now would be a good time to tell everyone that I was Nemesisboy. Next?

  41. rebecca Says:

ya!! i knew nemesis boy would be revealed!!

seriously, is there no way someone can just take over? i’m becoming increasingly sad about this.

  42. ben Says:

Also, I think as a final send off for Nashvillezine, we should all meet up Saturday afternoon and have a cookout in the Nashville Scene’s parking lot. Anyone interested?

  43. mike Says:

Okay, since we’re coming clean . . . I was the turkey sandwich Jay had for lunch.

  44. ryan Says:

Only if FeaturesFan will be there. Ben, was that you as well? T, thanks for the good times. You’re still hurting my management.

  45. Olaf Says:

Enough with the sentimental ass kissing… Todd sucks for not offering to hand the keys off to someone else so this place doesnt shut down. Or maybe he did and no one took him up on it. In which case all the rest of you suck. Jerks.

  46. tracy Says:

    nemesisboy revealed?!?!?

ok so who was creedfriend? somebody better come correct.

  47. Chris "Slack" Spoltore Says:

Me and Ben offered to keep the site running, as well as change up some things and bring in new writers, but Todd didn’t want to give it to anyone else, and preferred just killing it. Can’t blame him, but we tried. Several times. So we’re considering starting a new site, but I don’t know yet. We’ll see.

  48. Bawston Sean Says:

Nashville Scene parking lot on Saturday? What time? I’m gonna have a hell of a hangover that afternoon and would like to start drinking as soon as possible…Nashville zine needs a proper burial.

Todd A:You did a damn fine job. Book #3 should be a Please Kill Me-style history of Nashville rock-I can only imagine the dirt that you could dig up. Best of luck.

Eeveryone out in Zine-land:post-rock still blows, Rundgren’s still a fucktard and you should all come out to Grand Palace on Friday night for our St. Patricks Day party.

  49. ktbug Says:

i do have to say that, being fairly new to this site, i was entertained and amused daily by the rants and randomness that abounded. good luck and thanks

  50. alexis Says:

    do it chris

  51. ben Says:

Me and Todd decided that a good “spin-off” site should be titled Nashvillecream.com.

  52. Keith Says:

I heard that this was happening about a week ago, but I was holding my breath that it wouldn’t. This is really the only site of its kind, and I don’t see it being replaced comparably. For a member of the Nashville rock community, it was the absolute best place to reach your “target market.” For a fan of local music, it was the absolute best place to find out about a show worth seeing. I really hated the attitudes of some of the posters sometimes, but the site itself was so important, and it’s a huge blow for it to go away with no chance of being taken over.

For me personally, it served my ego well. My first ever individual interview was here, and it was a big honor. I was also one of the lucky ones that got to have most of my shows written up. Call it ass kissing or whatever you want, but it served me well and that’s the important thing!

I’ll also miss all the fake personas such as nemisisboy, caligula, and whatever Caldwell was going by there for awhile.

For now, all I can do is plug one more show!

KEITH HOSTS 8 OFF 8th MONDAY APRIL 3rd

    So far confirmed:
    Apollo Up!
    Umbrella Tree
    The Clutters (tentative)
    Beth from FC
    Imagine Asians (Jeff’s version)
    Lylas
    DJ Kidsmeal

I guess you’ll have to stay tuned to myspace to find out who else will be there.

Bye Nashvillezine. I’ll miss you and I look forward to your inevitable reunion. This is Nashville afterall.

  53. Keith Says:

    oops. I meant carligula.

  54. davis Says:

i’m sad to see the site go… always provided a (mostly) complete listing of great shows in town. cultiv8 will hopefully take the place of nashvillezine, i’ve been meaning to check it out.

and friday, everyone should go to the Blue Raider Block Party during the day and get drunk, then go to the Grand Palace party afterward to get drunker.

and i still like post rock.

  55. elise tyler Says:

even though i didn’t post on here, i read it everyday…todd, i am sad you have decided to shut it down, it is completely understandable.

like several others have mentioned above, this was a great forum for the nashville music scene. i think it made people go to more shows (i definitely did), learn about local bands they may not know, and give the non-musicians a place to voice their support or criticism (after all, the ego deserves both). lots of other cities have great online resources for the local music scene…it is an asset to have this type of medium for communication, especially with the nashville music scene, which can sometimes be a bit…closed off from oustiders, i suppose.

we can’t just let this gap go unfilled.

  56. I Eats Paint Says:

    Todd,

I’ve told you before and I stand behind it, what you and other volunteers did here meant so much to the vitality of the Middle TN scene - thanks again.

  57. aaron robinson Says:

man oh man oh man. this sucks. I’ve had nashvillezine as the home page on my web browser for a couple of years now. i regret not writing for the site more often. thanks to Todd for scoring the Jolie Holland interview for me, and for pretty much posting something anytime I or my band did anything.

i volunteer to write for whatever new thing emerges in the wake of the loss of this lovely website. thanks to Todd for creating something that was unique and important and generally better than its better-funded competitors.

    it’s been real.
    -aaron

  58. SimplySteve Says:

Todd, I think the only time I’ve ever met you was at the Mercy Lounge, and Atom Andersen introduced me to you, and this thing was still in it’s infancy. But you did something truly amazing with this site, and it will be hard to fill the ‘Zine’s shoes, but I think someone should at least try. Perhaps Cultiv8 would be a good place to start. I just hope the folks who are running that realize that they can’t be a listing service and attempt to cover “everything.” Nashvillezine didn’t try to do that, and I think anything that does try to encompass the entirety of the middle TN music scene and all it’s genres will ultimately fail. Such a website would need so much work and attention that a full time salaried staff probably couldn’t keep up with it. Whatever attempts to fill these shoes needs to focus on the same types of bands that the ‘zine did.

Now I just have to make it through the withdrawal process… It’s going to be tough when I get my daily urges to go check the ‘zine, then remember what has happened, and that empty feeling surges through the pit of my stomach. Folks, I think we need to start a Nashvillezine rehab support group…

  59. kelly Says:

Thanks Todd and talanted contributors. I will miss the Zine.

  60. clist Says:

    Todd,

As Chris mentioned above, I would’ve had more blockbuster nights…er…netflix nights if it weren’t for your site and its contributers. I found out about some amazing shows and thank you for keeping it going as long as you did. We at Clist would like to give you our best and may you have a great time doing whatever you feel passionate about.

    cheers,
    jonathan (of clist)

  61. toddk Says:

Todd, shit. Goddamnit, dude. Nashvillezine has been such a fun thing to have around for the past several years, and it’ll suck to miss it every day. I really think that the vitality of our scene these days owes a lot of gratitude to Todd A. Posts and comments here gave personalities to familiar faces at shows and connected many of us that might not have talked otherwise. Today I feel a definite kinship with Nashville’s rock music people that I would have never realized without the Zine. The Zine is what kept a lot of us from being pissed about music stuff and gave us an opportunity to have fun with it outside of band practices and shows. Big, big, big thanks and respect to Todd for all his ideas and hours. Man, I’ve been proud of you for all your work here, and I’m proud to see you make the decision to put all that effort into yourself. Best of luck, of course.

And fucking shit, people! Go to Amazon and buy his goddamn book if you haven’t yet. “Being Good” by Todd A. Its such a good read, seriously. Todd’s book is better than any local band’s record, I swear to god. You will laugh, you will be entertained, you will turn pages, you will laugh more. You will call your friend and say, “I am reading the best book right now.” Its the least you can do to say thanks. And then you’ll say thanks again for such a good book.

    Adios, Zine.

  62. jay Says:

Crap, I definitely didn’t see this coming. Thanks for all your hard work everybody. I’m sad to see the site go. Good luck with your novels, Todd.

RE: Nashvillecream.com: Yes! I want to help.

  63. Erin Says:

Todd, you are wonderful, but you know that. I will miss this.

  64. hartley Says:

well crap, where else will I find people discussing how “gay” theory 8 bands are?

I think everyone here would agree this site is the most important things to happen to the nashville scene in the past few years.

I will miss checking it every morning when I get to work.

Todd, are you sure you aren’t just doing this to get 100+ posts on why this site shouldn’t die?

If someone doesn’t keep this going it will be a huge loss to our scene and to everything we’ve worked so hard on the past few years.

    no pressure…

  65. mellenia Says:

    Everyone will miss this.

There is nothing to do on the internet now.

  66. Nemesisboy Says:

    http://nemesisboy.blog-city.com

  67. marilyn Says:

wha? no. y’all who have mentioned keeping it alive in another form… please do. On the bright side, I may go out and get some sun now.

  68. josh Says:

it’s been fun reading. goodnight and goodluck

  69. amber Says:

This is like someone died…kinda. The Zine has been great, but it won’t be long until Todd delivers other great things. He’s the most creative man I know. Cheers to you!
And everyone should buy Being Good because the short story (Tim’s Funeral) included is one of the funniest things I have ever read.

  70. justin Says:

Myself, and the rest of the hotpipes appreciate everything that this site has done for us, and like Keith, this site has always been nothing shy of amazing in being able to get the “good word” out. It blows that it will not be around anymore and I hope one day something comes along that can in some way or another rival it, but it will take a monumental effort. Thank you so much Todd and crew for the entertainment over the past three years.

  71. Erik Says:

First off I would like to thank Nashvillezine and all the contributors in supporting Vacant Cage Records over the last couple of years. We truly did appreciate it and are thankful for promoting the label, the bands, and the releases. Thank You.

Now I know most of you haven’t seen are name pop up in a while. The reason for this is that we have shut down. This may be old news for a lot of you, but due to things that were some what out of our control (distribution), we have delayed the news. Through we are still going through getting that completed and out of the way, we felt that this would be the site that we would of made it public on. Therefore we will join Nashvillezine in making March 15, 2006 the day that Vacant Cage Records also says goodbye. Whether you liked us, hated us, or didn’t give a shit, we would like to thank everyone that helped us accomplish what we did. Some will say that we didn’t accomplish anything, but in our minds we made an effort to do something good for this scene. Whether we made that a sucess or failed is up to you. Again, thanks for everything and we wish all the luck to EVERYONE!!

  72. daniel Says:

fuck. I have been in Chicago for seven months now. Everyday I read this shit likes it’s the news. And then I read the news. Now what will I read like it’s the news before I read the news? Thanks for the site everyone. Goodluck Todd.

  73. Joe Says:

Thanks for everything you’ve done here Mr. Anderson. Grrls & Boyz and Lake Fever are forever in your debt. You’re a hell of guy and quite the gentleman. See you in the real world.

  74. Ashley Says:

Todd is one of the best-looking guys I know.

  75. pezbot Says:

Damn, I’ll miss this sight. I guess I shoulda adversited more. Great Job with the sight I’ll miss the written beat downs, I guess I have to go back to beating up Conway on a weekly basis….

  76. Mrs. Millions Says:

    Tits,

Thanks to you for all your hard work and dedication over the past couple of years. Even though I never commented, I viewed the site daily and enjoyed the humor, sarcasm, and info that was provided. It’s amazing to me how easily you grew the zine and how many fans and contributors you had. I’m sad to see it go…but understand your time and energy should be spent elsewhere. Let’s make a deal…if your novel isn’t on the Top 10 Best Sellers List in the next year, you’ll bring the zine back.

    Good luck!

  77. joshzilla Says:

shit - now where am i gonna get to post pictures of sandwiches and promote my “salad is murder” lifestyle for $10/2 months?!? thanks todd - y’all will be missed.

  78. Shannon Says:

great. now i have to find another site where i can be a voyeur.

  79. Carligula Says:

I was really looking forward to the “BYOP doesn’t deserve to play at Coachella and Lollapalooza” comments.

  80. Michael T. Davis Says:

Thank you Todd for your support, I personally know how hard it is to do something you love for little or no money. Thank you Zine writers for all you did.
Thank you Nashville music fans. This forum has been a pleasure to contribute to as well. And more importantly it has been vital to the local music so many people hold dear, especially Fictitious Records.

    Awesome!

  81. me Says:

so who’s gonna step up here and start a new site? for real. obviously there is plenty of interest. and more than interest, NEED. we actually NEED something like the zine.

  82. nick Says:

i am glad to see that Todd is over the Nashville music scene, as much as i am…come on we gotta hit at least 100 comments…

  83. Todd Hedrick Says:

I rarely posted, but I read everything on the site almost every day, and there wasn’t one day that went by where I wasn’t laughing out loud at something. I will miss all the witty banter, all the show listings/reviews/news, the local celebrity gossip, and most of all, all the random links to stories about Courtney Love. Now how am I going to find out what’s up with Mrs. Cobain the moment it happens? Good luck with your novels, Todd. I look forward to reading them and seeing you around town still at the rock shows. Thanks for the great site and great work. RIP Zine!

  84. andy Says:

who’s gonna pick up the torch?

  85. 'lil smell Says:

I do wish you wouldn’t shut this site down. I prefer you being locked in your bedroom working away on your laptop and staying far far away from the kitchen sink with your camera. Maybe now you can spend some quality time with the C.H.A.D. and ask it nicely to discontinue it’s WWE Smackdown sessions at 7am above my head. Thanks. I’d appreciate that.

You are a fabulously talented writer Felix. I’m super proud to call you my roommate.

    Now go swiffer.

  86. Chuck Says:

I really hate to see this go.

Thank you Todd, and everyone involved.

  87. Grand Palace Records Says:

Now seems like a good time to announce the launch of the Grand Palace Records blog. We’ll be posting updates on all of the new releases we get in and a bunch of extra goodies. Right now we’ve got the new TV On The Radio tracks and some links to Silver Jews live tracks and videos.

Thanks Todd for all your work in making the mid-state rock scene a force to be reckoned with.

  88. Grand Palace Records Says:

uh, it seems like the link is being retarded, so here’s the url for the Grand Palace blog.

  89. Elizabeth Says:

oh no! I’m so sad. How will I keep up with all the crazy Nashville gossip all the way up here in Ohio now? Chris Slack doesn’t always answer his phone.

  90. monthy Says:

    but i only posted once.

    okay, who wants cake?

  91. jeffery neutron Says:

i kind of do like that the very last show posted is Dinosaur, Jr.

  92. Mark P. Says:

Yeah! We’ve come full circle, dude. Every kid in this town should be at that show and get some schoolin’.

  93. Terah Says:

    Dear Todd~
You will always be one of my all time favorites!! Let’s please get our game on again soon! I am sad to see this go, but very happy to see you move forward in your life. You are capable of so much, my boy!;) Hope to see you soon!

  94. mandy Says:

this is super sad. i live in st. louis but travel down to nashville when i can (not nearly often enough) for the great scene - i loved the zine because it kept me up to date on shows and news. and the other stuff was just great.

i am sad to see it go….

  95. well-placed-source Says:

wow. the first thing i have to say is probably what we all should have been saying all along—thank-you, Todd. Running this site must have been a thankless task, and it obviously has turned into something we all have taken for granted. I feel really bad now because I criticized this website on my last post. Sheesh I feel like an asshole.

I hope somebody creates something that will carry on this site’s tradition of local music news, ironic parody, and a forum for both intelligent discussion and uninformed pompous hipster dialogue and epithets. But the odds are against it, which is a credit to what Todd has accomplished with this site.

So I guess we’re all back to reading Flax’s weekly column. (which has thankfully informed me that the only cool thing coming out of Nashville are the Movement Nashville bands). Ha Ha, one last smarmy swipe for old times sake.

Oh well, back to the features message board?

  96. horacorrecta Says:

first off, thank you todd. you filled a much needed gap in the scene. there is no replacing this site… many people will try to pick up the torch, but that will only oversaturate the market for it. so, everyone come together. i will be damned if i have to read a zine based out of murfreesboro.

  97. Keith Says:

Too bad we can’t comment on Todd A’s blog. I wouldn’t mind moving the party over there. And bring back poptionary.com. And bring back nashvillezine.com. Oh wait.

  98. nicole Says:

I’m not very vocal on here, but I’ve been reading for a while and have really enjoyed the site — I’d often recommend it to folks new to town, looking for the scoop on what to check out around here, music-wise. I’ve also personally admired the site from the whole successful self-publishing angle, too — keeps all the fun of DIYish publications, but very professionally executed…

So, thanks, Todd, and to all the contributors on here, and good luck with your future projects!

(why does this feel like I’m signing a yearbook? BFF!! 2Good+2Be=4gotten!!!)

  99. jessica Says:

    todd…
congratulations on a successful 2 years! i’m sad to see it end, but it’s been great!

    thanks!

  100. David Says:

From an everyday reader as well as everyday lurker thanks for your hard work over the past 2 years. Best of luck in the coming days with the writing and the career.

  101. jeffery neutron Says:

    jeez, i thought this would’ve reached 100 comments 2 days ago…

  102. Carligula Says:

I’m not surprized. High comment counts typically rely on back-and-forth arguing. This is probably the record for most comments from different people.

  103. laws Says:

    Thanks for the good time!

  104. that guy that screams Says:

i always thought it was todd “K” that ran this site. shit, i hate the A one.

  105. nathan Says:

    i will miss this place.

new darling hearts lp preview up. www.myspace.com/thedarlinghearts
    stay tuned.

  106. Paul Says:

There probably hasn’t been a day in the last two years that I haven’t checked this site multiple times. I cannot and will not go back to the Rage or Scene. The format here is just right. So please, don’t kill it. Maybe give it a good kick in the balls, but let somebody else nurse it back to health and keep in going.
