Saturday, 30 July 2005Tiger Bear Wolf @ Radio CafeHello Sir Record’s Tiger Bear Wolf are at the Radio Cafe tonight, with local back-to-the fundamentals rock band The Squibs. The Faves (featuring members of The Cool Jerks and The Squibs) open the show. 9 p.m. Emery Reel @ Hair of the DogInstrumental combo Emery Reel (are they the only instrumental band left in Nashville now?) play tonight with A Poet Named Revolver, Moira, and Oblio. 9 p.m., $5 The Features and The Shazam @ Cannery Row RevivalThe Features will be playing outside the Mercy Lounge with Fountains of Wayne and The Shazam. This will be the first Features show in Nashville in some time. Make sure you get there early for the Features and the “uninflated beer prices.” I’ll believe that when I see it. This show should start around 7 and cost you $5. New Designs In Architecture @ Fort AwesomeRemember the days of house shows? Well, I am happy to see that they are back in style. If you’re still as D.I.Y. as they come, then I suggest you attend as many house shows as possible this summer. Lets show our scene that we are more than just promo packets and over booked bars. A good way to start would be with Fort Awesome’s(411 N. Academy Blvd. in Murfreesboro) latest show featuring Murfreesboro’s newest indie/emo rock group New Designs in Architecture, w/ Mell. By far, the best way to experience a show is to sweat it out with the bands in a small basement or over sized shed. Show starts at 8:00 pm. Friday, 29 July 2005Five Questions with… GhostfingerIt seemed like for months, friends had been telling me that I had to see this amazing new band called Ghostfinger, and I was like okay, yeah, whatever. When I finally got to see them for the first time a few months back, I was confused and amused, yet astounded. I walked into the End, and the guitar player is shredding on some metal hot lixx while wearing only a headband and a pair of briefs that appeared to have not been washed since sometime in late 1987. There are only three words to describe that show: totally awesome. On seeing them a second time, the band was fully clothed and rocked even harder. Their schizophrenic musical style combines abrasive hard rock and swaggering, Stones-y riffs, and it somehow remains cohesive. We recently spoke with singer/guitarist Richie G. to get the stink on the Finger. Ghostfinger / ASB @ SpringwaterThis is the kind of show that just dares you not to drink. The Greatest Band in America®, Ghostfinger play demented, bizarre rock that’s just as metal as it is country. All without a bass player. And the Alcohol Stunt Band are aiming to dethrone Dave Cloud as the reigning Kings of dive bar rock around here. Ole Mossy Face @ the Radio CafeNeed more proof that some of the region’s best music comes from right here in town? Come down to OMF’s release party for their split LP with Lawrence, KS The Ants. Each band has three songs on the record, and the vinyl slab will be well worth whatever small price there is to pay. Heavy blues trio Black Diamond Heavies are also on the bill. 9 p.m. Thursday, 28 July 2005Bang Bang Bang / Novelift @ Mercy LoungeBang Bang Bang is a new big rock band featuring bygone members of Llama as well as a Darling Heart. According to their bio, Jimmy Chamberlain thinks they’re amazing. They open for Novelift. You can hear samples at their myspace pages. 9pm Apollo Up!/The Ex-Lovers @ Radio CafeApollo Up! has been working hard in the studio on the follow up to Light the End and Burn it Through, and if you ask very nicely, they may play a few of those songs for you tonight. The Ex-Lovers play drunk rock of the Stones/Westerberg variety, and they make a beautiful mess doing it. Drunk Horse are a band from Oakland whose love of ZZ Top probably leaves a lot of hipsters feeling more than a little uncomfortable; that is only one of the reasons why we love them. This show will kick ass. 9 p.m., $5, 18+ Wednesday, 27 July 2005New PA at SpringwaterAfter 5 years and countless benefit shows, the Springwater has finally raised enough money to buy a new PA. (Or so Richie Ghostfinger says. We’ll believe it when we see/hear it.) |
