If you’re on the East Side tonight, the 5 Spot has got a jam-packed evening of excitement for New Year’s. Losers Beat Winners open the night that also includes the harsh ballads of Chris Crofton from the Alcohol Stuntband, the smooth country tones of Ole Mossy Face and the brutal noise of Falls City Angels. The Bubblegum Complex will close the party down and ring in the New Year from the stage. With so many bands, we hear they’re starting early. 9pm.
w/Willie Heath Neal, Fugitive Glue & Hands Down Eugene
Hands Down Eugene is the baby of Ole Mossy Face keyboardist Matt Moody. He’s put together an all-star band including members of OMF, The Carter Administration, and The Bubblegum Complex. There’s gonna be a lot of bar hoppin’ for these guys since most of them are in bands that are playing the 5 Spot that night too!
probably 9′ish
probably free
Denny Diamond and the Longfellows ring in the New Year at the Mercy Lounge. It’s a whopping $25 in advance, $30 at the door, but the Diamond will make sure the evening goes down in style. 9:30pm
Ringing in the new year at The End this year will be the much-discussed new Dallas Thomas (Asschapel, On Command) band, Falcon. Unlike Asschapel or On Command, Falcon is actually almost poppy in their metal (in the same way that The Fucking Champs, early Metallica, or Megadeath)… Actually, imagine any of those bands mentioned and imagine them at their heaviest and most melodic and that’s a lot of what Falcon is. That’s not to say that the band is the most accessible of metal bands but it’s not far from it and is very catchy. This will be their first show, and probably one of the biggest events taking place in the music scene tonight.
Opening the show will be one of Nashville’s more popular new bands, The Privates, as well as the big riffing, sing your lungs out Laws Rushing.
Not sure the start time yet but I’d say 9:30pm is a safe bet and somewhere around $5 is probably close. or call it “TBA”
It occurs to me in retrospect that my Wrap Up doesn’t have much to say about live bands, venues, etc. But really, who wants to hear me join the chorus of people who say the 5 Spot is the best place to hang out in, fried chicken is good to eat and I’d like to nurse Ben Slack back to health? I mean, those are givens, aren’t they? So, read on for my wrap up of recorded music.

Those of you who know me understand that I generally save my nursing skills exclusively for the care of women. However, when these top rockers were injured in 2004, I could not help but dream of being a rock star’s nurse. Who wouldn’t want to care for these hot rocker’s wounds and tend to their basic needs? I decided that the world would be a better place for music if I provided my nursing aid to these injured rockers. The top 5 injured rockers of 2004…

Every funkin New Year’s, I’m all like, “What the funk are we going to do tonight?” And everybody else is like, “I don’t give a funk. What the funk do you want to do?” And we’ll like go to a party that’s so funkin lame and I’ll run into some chick I funked six months ago and didn’t call afterwards and she’s all, “Funk you!” And then I’m like, this has totally funked up my night. Yeah, it’s always like that. Happy funkin New Year’s. But this year, we’re totally going to the Boro’s Muthafunkin Throwdown with Sky-Hi and VCSB. Starts at 9:30 and costs $8 - $10 (What is that with or without the funkin salad bar?)
Wall Street greets the New Year’s with The Juan Prophet Organization, Rooftop Society and Page 80. Show starts at 9pm and they’ll have free champagne at midnight.
I have heard the future of recorded music, and it is a glorious thing. On a total impulse buy, I picked up the recently released Peter Gabriel: Play, The Videos on DVD. It may be, without a doubt, the most amazing sounding thing I’ve ever heard!
