Brace yourself, hard-working bands of Nashville and Murfreesboro, you’re going to love this. Our sources tell us that tomorrow’s edition of the Scene will feature Nashville relative-unknowns, Be Your Own Pet, on the cover of the paper.
If you’ve never heard or heard of Be Your Own Pet, you’re not alone. They’re teenagers who’ve only played a handful of shows and have been around less than a year. Yet, they have influential parents and friends and now they’re on the cover of the Scene. Yes, they’re talented. Yes, we’ve said good things about them. Yes, we like them and wish them well. But isn’t there a band around more deserving of this much publicity? Isn’t there a band with a more interesting story? And do you need any more proof that the “alternative weekly” only fulfills half the qualifications for that title?

Sources indicate that the Red Rose is officially down and out, due to a lack of funds.
Here is the official statement from their website.
It’s true. The Red Rose is closing after 12ish years of business. Rather than renew our lease, we’ve decided that this is a good stopping point.
Thanks to everyone who has supported the Red Rose for all of these years by showing up every day and buying stuff. We needed more people like you. And thanks for tipping.
Thanks to everyone who ever worked at the Red Rose under Patty, the Mandys, Bill, Mike, Bingham, and Debra. Your pension should kick in real soon now.
If you’d like to buy some restuarant equipment, we are selling all of what we’ve got. Call Debra at 525-6692 if you are interested, or check back here. We might be doing some kind of yard sale thingy. More info to follow.
Toby Keith has given a lot of us new reasons to despise country music. Now he is giving America a chain of restaraunts.
“Toby Keith’s ‘I love this bar and grill.”
“It’s going to be John Wayne meets Captain America,” Toby said.
Nashville, oddly enough, didn’t make the cut to get one.

It’s really unfair to say that Vaz features former members of AmRep riff-noise kings Hammerhead; maybe Hammerhead’s bio should’ve read “featuring future members of Vaz”. The cocksure duo brings their dark, intense take on rock music to the End tonight. With Ovo, Cock ESP, Mr. Natural, and Taiwan Deth. 9 pm, $5, 18+, earplugs recommended
A recent entry on a local band’s messageboard has stated that The Red Rose Coffee House in Murfreesboro has officially gone out of business. The announcement said that as of 11:00 p.m. on Monday, the business shut it’s doors for good. The Red Rose is best known as being one of the only all ages venues in the area. During it’s heyday the coffeehouse hosted such acts as The Mooney Suzzuki, Beat Happening, The Features, The Rock*A*Teens, Calvin Johnson, The Faint, The Datsuns, and Mates of State.
If you’re wondering whether or not you should go to this show, it’s too late. It’s already sold out. Muse play anguished Brit-rock that sounds like Radiohead’s first couple of records compressed and re-played through a dozen Marshall stacks. The Exit are the really interesting band on the bill tonight. Their new album Home for an Island goes much further towards creating their own sound from their influences than their first record. Where their debut hinted at a Police-esque fusion of new wave and reggae, the new record actually delivers a smooth amalgam of that sound. They’re heavy on the reverb but that’ll probably sound pretty cool in the Mercy Lounge.
So evidently, The Kings of Leon (our favorite band in the world ever) are right now at the Brentwood Skate Center. They’re participating in Blender magazine’s “Spend our $848″ feature. They’ve bought loads of booze and rented the whole place out. We have spies planted inside and hopefully we’ll have pics later. But ya’ll can try to get your asses down there to partake in the fun if you move now.
Since the Bubblegum Complex released last year’s full length Looking Down at Cloud Nine, a lot of things have changed for the band. They switched drummers, added a guitar player, and were rendered almost nonexistent after singer/guitarist Caldwell Dunlap suffered serious injuries in a Spinal Tap-like accident this past summer. Through all of this, they found time to go into the studio and record a new five song EP, Wonderkids.

If you never attended the sorely missed Blind Draw Music Nights at the Boardroom, then you can stop kicking yourself now, because the good folks at the 5 Spot in East Nashville have given the entertaining event a new home. Here’s the lowdown: you pay a couple of bucks and put your name in a hat. Your name, along with three other individuals, is drawn and you now have your band. You and your new bandmates have 45 minutes to come up with a name and learn two songs - originals or covers - before competition with the other bands begins. It’s sort of like a drunk, rock ‘n roll version of “Making the Band.” The results can range from amazing to amazingly bad, but it’s always super-entertaining. 7 p.m.
Slack plays their “end of tour” show tonight at the Red Rose. Joining them are Be Your Own Pet, who, despite a lack of recorded output or live experience, are apparently the best band to ever come out of Nashville. Also on the bill are “special guests”. We don’t know who it is, but if Three Doors Down happens to show up, don’t act all surprised and star struck. 9 p.m., $5
